How to Brew Herb Teas

Brewing and sipping herb teas is nurturing to your soul and spirit. Not only that, but when your herbs are chosen with a health purpose in mind, they connect you with Mother Nature's natural medicine.

Whether you use loose or bagged herbal teas, they are very easy to brew. Follow these simple steps to get the most benefit from your herbs and teas.

For Bagged Herb Teas simply add the bag to boiled water in your cup. Cover your cup with a saucer or lid to keep the volatile oils from escaping. Let steep for five to ten minutes or longer to extract all the benefits. Follow directions on the box for best results.

Loose herbs and teas are also very easy to brew. They cost less per ounce than herbs sold in individual bags and may be of better quality. It's best to choose wildcrafted or organic herbs when possible, especially if you are using large quantities to avoid taking in lots of chemical contaminants.

Always buy herbal teas from a reputable source. I buy most of my bulk herbs and loose tea blends on-line from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Reputable companies such as Organic India, Celestial Seasonings, Traditional Medicinals and Yogi teas sell good quality herbs in tea bags that can be found in local stores.

You can make enough herb tea for a day or two, or a cup at a time. Generally use a heaping teaspoon of loose herb per cup of water.

For one cup, it's easiest to use a mesh cup or ball that sits right in your tea cup while the herbs are brewing. For larger servings, a french press, or tea pot with an infuser works well. You can also let the herbs rest in a pot or cup and then strain before drinking.

If you are using liquid tinctures or extracts, add the appropriate number of drops to a cup of hot water and drink. Capsules can also be opened and mixed with hot water before drinking.

See the video below for making herbal teas at home. Then by all means sit down and enjoy sipping your brew throughout the day. Enjoy a few deep breaths and mindful moments before picking the pace back up. Your mind and body will thank you.

Brewing loose herbs and teas this way is good for stress relief and extracting the healthy constituents from the herbs. To enjoy the nutritional benefits of herbs, much larger amounts are needed. Make herbal infusions to extract vitamins and minerals from healthy herbs.

Black, green and white teas require shorter brewing times than herbal teas. Learn how to brew a perfect cup of green tea for health here.
