Strong Relaxing Teas

by Eric

What tea/herb is very strong that will keep me relaxed, like a valium type of tea?

Thanks.

Val's Response:

There are several herbs that have a reputation for being relaxing and calming. Usually these herbs have a mild sedative effect. One example of this is chamomile.

Kava kava and valerian are sometimes called herbal valium. Valerian has a stimulating effect in a small number of people however.

Some herbs, like California Poppy, have a strong sedative effect. These herbs may best be used in the evening before bed. If you take them during the day, avoid driving and other activities that require you to be alert - at least until you can gauge your response to the herb.

You may want to use herbs with a mild effect during the day and one that is a bit stronger in the evening to help you wind down.

Even though certain herbs may be touted as relaxing herbs, it's important to remember that they have a variety of actions. It's always best to match up your specific needs with the plant's actions to get a good fit.

For example, if you are stressed because of thoughts that cycle over and over, passionflower may be a good fit. If you experience digestive upset when stressed, chamomile is a good choice. Valerian can help you sleep and ease muscle tension. If pain is keeping you awake and tense, Jamaican dogwood may be helpful.

A reliable source of quality organic herbs and information is Mountain Rose Herbs. Just type the name of the herb in the search bar on the site to read the herbal profile. The profile will explain the herb's actions, common uses, and precautions.

Keep in mind that herbs are not drugs and in appropriate doses will not be as strong as some pharmaceuticals. Just like using drugs, relying solely on herbs to relax you is a stop-gap measure without long-term effects.

I encourage you to practice stress relief techniques in addition to your teas and herbs.

Best of luck.
