The Conscious Mind
Of the three levels of mind, we are most aware of the conscious mind. We think, learn, decide, imagine and analyze with this part of the brain. When we receive information from the outside world, or our physical bodies, we are conscious of these sights, smells, sounds, tastes and feelings. When we choose to use 'will power', take decisive action, or be on our best behavior, we are working at the conscious level of mind. Although we often believe that this part of the brain is in charge most of the time, in reality we only act consciously up to five percent of the time. The rest of the time the unconscious mind is in charge. Children younger than five years old have few brain waves associated with consciousness. They function mostly from the much slower theta and delta brainwaves associated with trance, hypnosis and sleep.
Scientists don't know all the areas of the brain involved in consciousness. They know that the prefrontal cortex directly behind your forehead is important for 'executive functions'. It helps you make decisions, plan your thoughts and actions, correct social behavior, and express your personality. You use it to compare and contrast, set expectations and predict consequences.
The Conscious Mind and Manifesting
Consciousness is the level of mind you use to wish for and imagine what you want. It motivates you and helps you study and learn about what you need to do to achieve your goals. You use it to decide on the most useful course of action and what you are going to do next. It is very useful for willpowering your way through the first few days and weeks of developing new thoughts and behaviors. What it can not do is subdue your powerful unconscious programming for long. The conscious mind is only in control about 5-10% of the time. That's why you lapse back into old habits and routines if subconscious reprogramming isn't part of your plan. This is not your fault. Your brain is simply carrying out what it knows. This programming is much like the software on a computer. And just like that software, you can change it. Deciding on the changes, initiating them, and making them happen until they becomes automatic is where the conscious mind comes in. When these two levels work together, you can shift your beliefs and make lasting changes in your thoughts and behaviors. Together they will help you achieve your realistic goals and dreams.
