A Note from Val

Happy New Year! The much hyped 2012 is now here!

January 2012 marks the beginning of the end of the Mayan calendar and a 5,125 year-long cycle. Some people fear calamity. Many New Agers see 2012 as the beginning of a new era – a time marked by change, growth, and positive energy shifts.

Whether you believe any of this or not, I challenge and encourage you, and myself, to make 2012 a year of positive energy shifts, change and personal evolution. Let this be your year of new beginnings, the year you listen to your heart more and your 'shoulds' less, the year you take a stand for your health and happiness. Let this be the year you design your life by design and not default, and become the person who makes what you want happen.

Resolutions and New Beginnings

Although New Year’s resolutions may have fallen out of favor with many, the new year is a good time to begin again. It is a good time to remember that every day is a new day, a new opportunity to create the life you desire.

The truth is that it is never too late to begin again. It's never too late to improve your state of well-being. By well-being I mean your health, happiness, and quality of life in all areas of life. This is the foundation of holistic wellness. Every aspect of your life affects all aspects of your life. When you reduce stress, heal, or strengthen one aspect of your life, you affect your whole self for the better. And vice versa.

How do you do that? Sometimes in one amazing moment, sometimes in radical steps, but most often one step at a time. You do it with a plan and support and persistence. You do it by thinking progress, not perfection. You do it by brushing yourself off, reevaluating, and beginning again, even for the hundredth time.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. — Confucius

You remind yourself that all the little shifts you make will add up to large changes overall, that success is cumulative. Even though you may not see results as quickly as you want, you are mindful of the fact that you are reprogramming your mind and body to create new thoughts, feelings, behaviors and habits that will serve your new goals.

If you are in a northern zone right now, you only have to look out the window to see this principle in action. Up in the North Country, we currently have less than nine hours of daily sunlight (if and when the clouds part long enough). With the passing of the winter solstice, we head toward brighter days one minute every 24 hours. Even though the days are getting longer, it's too small a change to notice. Yet, by month's end, the cumulative effects of that one minute a day will be evident. And within a few months there will be big changes as spring crowds out winter. That’s how it can be with you and your dreams.

One common habit that will not help you change is procrastination. Making excuses, putting off until tomorrow and another tomorrow, and busying yourself with other ‘priorities’, is a sure-fire way to stay stuck.

Brian Tracy says,
“Did you know that the tendency to procrastinate is the primary reason many people live lives of desperation and frustration?

Here’s the thing: humans often procrastinate on large, important tasks with considerable future value. Naturally, this adds more stress and creates further hardship.

It takes a great deal of courage and discipline to break the habit of procrastination, but once you do, it will pay off for the rest of your life.”

Mr. Tracy is absolutely correct. However, even though discipline and courage are foundational, there are easier ways to succeed than just struggling and powering through.

Procrastination is often a result of subconscious signals that we are out of the comfort zone, and relieve that fear by finding something, or nothing, safe to do instead.

Thanfully, you can expand your comfort zone. With the help of powerful coaching methods, supportive inner and outer environments, and inner freedom techniques, you can create new patterns of thought and behavior that propel you forward toward your goal with greater ease.
