A Note from Val - Really Gross Medical Treatment

Several years ago, when I first read about using maggots to clean out wounds I thought it was really gross.

Even so, I could appreciate how nature created this symbiotic relationship between wounded creatures and fly babies. I was happy to see doctors using nature in this way to heal naturally when modern medicine fails.

Maggots, move over. Doctors have now come up with something that, in my mind, is even grosser.

Featured Article - Fecal Transplants and Probiotics

I thought I had heard everything - that is until I read about fecal transplants. You read that right. Fecal transplants.

If you need an incentive to eat and drink cultured foods this could be it.

As you probably know doctors rarely, if ever, prescribe or even suggest that patients use probiotics along with antibiotics. Probiotics prevent imbalances by repopulating the colon with helpful bacteria. Otherwise, yeast and bad bacteria get a free pass to wreak havoc in your intestines and eventually your body.

Antibiotics are indiscriminate. They kill all types of bacteria - good and bad. When healthy bacteria in the colon are weakened and killed, more opportunistic bad bacteria such as Clostrium difficile can infect the colon and overgrow, causing toxic buildup and inflammation.

Wellness Tip - Eat Pumpkin

Pumpkins are good for more than jack-o-lanterns and pie. After you and your kids have fun carving your pumpkin, roast the seeds and create some fun pumpkin dishes.

Pumpkins are an inexpensive, versatile, low calorie, low carb powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, fiber, flavonoids and antioxidants. Use pureed pumpkin in soups, pies, pancakes, and ravioli stuffing. Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, iron, and tryptophan.

One of my favorite tasty, easy, guilt-free snacks is a big scoop of canned pumpkin flavored with a big dash of pumpkin pie spice. Sweeten to taste with stevia, if desired. For a real treat, top with a dollop of real whipped cream. Enjoy!
